Split Rock

John and I went up to the north shore (aka Lake Superior shore in MN) and camped right by Split Rock lighthouse this week for two days and nights. It was so wonderful to get away and just BE together. Kinda weird at first, I’ll admit, but we kept busy with walking around, sitting by the fire (and of course, eating lots of s’mores!), takings beautiful pictures of the view we had of the lighthouse, lounging in our hammock, and playing with the chipmunks that visited us every couple hours. I loved not having any TV, internet or cell phone access for over two days. The sound of the waves crashing against the cliffs lulled me to sleep… even though my face was pretty chilled as I lay in my mummy-bag sleeping bag. This almost 10 yr old North Face sleeping bag is finally getting the use it was made for!

We’ll definitely be making camping trips like this as often as we can; it was very relaxing and fun and beautiful. I know John really enjoyed getting to use all the camping gear and gadgets that he’s been collecting since we got married last summer. I hardly had to plan or pack anything other than my clothes and toiletries (they had bathrooms AND showers!!) and John took care of the rest. He did so well! Our dehydrated thai food and chicken dumpling mixes that we tried weren’t all that bad! I think I might have even said that I would order them at a restaurant if I could… amazing.

I will post some pictures as soon as I get around to it, probably later tonight or this weekend. I have the weekend off this weekend, after only working Sunday, Thursday and Friday this week. I love not having to work M-F now. Although it makes it difficult to plan things with people, it really helps when my work week is broken up with a day or two (or three!) off every now and then. But, I need to plan meals for the next two weeks this weekend because starting Monday night I start night shifts again…. yay. Pictures to come soon; there’s some really good ones!

Alive… just messy and scabby.

Sorry for lack of posts lately… I was finishing up my college career, so I think that’s a good excuse. I’m pretty much done, minus finishing up a final paper for nursing, but it’s a super easy paper and should be done in a few hours tomorrow morning, so I feel like I’m done but yet I can’t claim with an honest heart that I’m done yet. Sigh.

Otherwise, not a whole lot has been going on. I’ve had some very interesting experiences in the neighborhood with the city-folk, which is a completely new thing for me (and kinda scary right now, but I think I’ll get used to it). One example: I let a ‘neighbor’ (not so sure she is actually a neighbor) down the street from our building use my cell phone to call her friend since apparently she was locked out from her apartment. Later that night I got about 5 phone calls from her friend, thinking that I was the girl that called him (Her name was Zee, or something. His was Howard.) He left a quite inappropriate voicemail for Zee that I listened to at about 1:15am that night… which couldn’t have creeped me out more, so of course the phone went off after that. After a friendly text that I sent to him telling him that I am not in fact his friend Zee, he called me and apologized, after asking if Zee was here with me…. oh dear. That was quite the experience that night/day.

In other news, John and I got a new bicycle the other day and the next day he had quite a spill on a bike path near the Mississippi River in Mendota and when I came to rescue him, I found my dear husband all scraped up and bloody. He didn’t mention that when he called for me to come get him! Apparently it would have made me too stressed during my drive there, which ended up being super stressful anyways since I-35E south was closed…. So anyway, we came back to our place, after a quick stop at the local Walgreens to stock up on bandages and tape and antiseptic spray (which claims to be ‘no sting’ but man does it sting! per John). He had scrapes on one of his knees, a forearm/elbow, a shoulder, and on his face/chin. Poor thing. He couldn’t smile or even kiss me yesterday because it hurt him to move his face. I felt so bad for him and it was very hard to clean his wounds knowing it was hurting him more, though we both knew it was worth it. Definitely feels different to care for your husband than a complete stranger, that’s for sure.

So, now John’s new bike is in the shop getting worked on, since the front tire needs replacing and the rim is a little bent… and John’s old bike also is being fixed right now since the seat randomly fell off while he was riding it last week and one of the tire spokes came out. John has no bike and can’t ride even if he did… so he’s pretty bummed since he’s been enjoying it immensely these past few weeks. I’m sure God has a reason for this though, perhaps to remind him not to find his joy so much in biking but in Him alone. Please be praying for John though, that he heals up quick and doesn’t get infected.

In the mean time, our apartment is still a complete mess and once I finish that paper tomorrow I will finally begin the grueling process of organizing our living room and bedroom. I’m loving living here, just can’t wait for it to not feel so messy and chaotic. I’ve loved being able to walk around town and feel connected to a community, but again, being in a city is definitely new and weird for me. One neat thing we have done, for example: Tonight John and I went up to the roof of the apartment building and were able to watch the fireworks at the Capitol, since this week marked Minnesota’s 150th anniversary. It was quite the view! Eventually I’ll think to take pictures of these events… sorry.

But for now, since many (two) of you have requested some pictures, here are some: (and Jen, you’ve already seen these, sorry!)

BOFF?

Best Online Friends Forever, thats what we can become!   If you’re wondering what I’m about, here ya go.  My blogging will probably fall into one of these areas.  Interesting? Hmmm….we’ll see

  • Sports-In my opinion hockey and basketball are the only sports worth watching.  As far as Minnesota sports go, just watch hockey!  I enjoy the rest of my sports experienced first hand, outdoors!  Cycling has been my favorite activity for almost two decades now.  I like to run and toss frisbee with my friends at ultimate.  My lazy man sport is disc golf.  I have hopes of picking up a winter sport eventually, but for now I’m content taking walks nomatter what the temp.
  • History- I love Minnesota history.  History should really be experienced, touched and seen with your own eyes.  Try to grasp what lives went on before you, to know that there is more to come after you’re gone.  A old picture, a historic building, a historic marker……hard to pass up.
  • politics-  Go Ronald Reagan!  Seriously though, we’ll be fine.
  • Religion- Christian, a sheep at John Piper’s church
  • Other-Live concerts, a good beer, lifting weights, Settlers of Catan, camping, rock climbing, backpacking, talk radio, reading, Lost, Seinfeld
  • St Paul-  St. Paul, MN….the classier of the Twin Cities.

Current events

“Hey all the snow/ice has finally melted! yay!” was what I said to my husband at 8:00am this morning. Now, we have about 5 inches of snow on the ground.  Oh Minnesota… ————–In other news, I’ve decided to officially leave facebook for good now. No longer will I submit to that yoke of slavery!  I’m pretty pumped about it (but hope people don’t forget I exist now). —————Update: Forgot to mention another accomplishment (snow is an accomplishment?) of the day… I finished my resume and my application essay to a nursing job for new graduates at two of my favorite hospitals in the cities! So, after hearing back from a good friend on her suggestions for editing them, I will be printing them and mailing it off. This is my first time applying to a “real” job, so I’m a bit nervous. I need to trust that God has it figured out and he will provide me a job if he wills it. Worrying won’t help… (preaching to myself)…
